ABSTRACT

ObjectiveWith the increase in coffee consumption, its impact on health has garnered significant attention. However, the relationship between coffee intake and cancer risk remains controversial in epidemiological studies. To summarize the most reliable evidence on coffee consumption and cancer risk, we conducted a comprehensive review of meta-analyses examining the association between coffee consumption and cancer risk in various populations. MethodsMeta-analyses of observational studies were conducted, utilizing searches of the PubMed and Web of Science databases to identify associations between coffee intake and cancer risk. ResultsA total of 24 observational studies comprising 76 non-overlapping associations were included in this umbrella review. Coffee intake was found to be associated with a reduced risk of breast cancer, brain cancer, colon cancer, colorectal cancer, endometrial cancer, liver cancer, melanoma, non-melanoma, oral cancer, and oral/pharyngeal cancer. Conversely, coffee intake was associated with a high risk of urothelial carcinoma and bladder cancer. ConclusionModerate consumption of coffee has a wide range of potential benefits in reducing the risk of cancer. Further well-designed randomized controlled trials, taking into account other factors that may have contributed to bias, are needed to investigate the association between coffee consumption and cancer in other anatomical sites.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the efficacy of compressive cryotherapy on blood-loss control after total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods Fifty patients undergoing unilateral TKA were randomized into cryotherapy group and controlled group postoperatively. Patients in the cryotherapy group were treated with Iceman model 2200 cold therapy unit on the knee for 48 hours. The drainage volume of both groups was measured dynamically for 6 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours after the TKA. The hemoglobin and hematocrit were continuously followed up for 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours. The limb circumference was measured for 24 hours and 48 hours after the TKA. Postoperative 72-hour American Knee Society Score (KSS) was calculated. Results The hemorrhage volume of cryotherapy group was (198.12±8.88), (250.00±10.89), (301.00±15.44), (358.04±11.60) ml separately for 6 hours, 8 hours, 24 hours, 48 hours after the TKA and (249.88 ± 9.21), (302.60 ± 11.61), (369.12 ± 13.20), (450.40 ± 12.71) ml in the controlled group, (t=16.518-26.836, P<0.05) there was significant difference. The hemoglobin value of cryotherapy group was (130.1 ± 16.3), (117.5 ± 14.5), (115.0 ± 12.7) g/L separately for 24 hours, 48 hours, 72 hours, after the TKA and (119.9 ± 13.8), (106.7 ± 15.7), (108.6 ± 8.6) g/L in the controlled group, there was significant difference (t=2.07, 2.37, 2.52, P<0.05). The postoperative 24h and 48h values of hemoglobin and hematocrit were greater in the cryotherapy group than that in the controlled group (t=2.09, 2.54, P<0.05). The postoperative 24h and 48h edema (shown as limb circumference increase) was lighter in the cryotherapy group (above the knee t=2.63, 3.04, P<0.05, below the knee t=6.29, 12.03, P<0.05). These results were all statistically significant (P<0.05). The 72 h KSS values showed no differences in the two groups (P>0.05). Conclusions Compressive cryotherapy after TKA is effective in reducing blood loss and edema, which is beneficial to early recovery and functional rehabilitation.

ABSTRACT

Objective Maxillary canine palatal impaction is a common deformity in stomatology and its etiology remains dis-putable.The aim of this study is to investigate the crown-root morphology of the adjacent lateral incisors in patients with palatally impacted maxillary canines using cone-beam computed tomography ( CBCT) in order to explore its etiology. Methods Using CBCT scanning, we examined 94 maxillary canines in 84 patients, including 27 palatally impacted maxillary canines in 24 patients ( the experi- mental group) , 37 buccally impacted maxillary canines in 30 age-and sex-matched subjects ( control group A) , and 30 normal maxil-lary canines in 30 age-and sex-matched subjects ( control group B) .We selected some necessary reference planes, measured the ori-entation and position of the chosen canines, and studied the morphology of the adjacent lateral incisors by CS 3D imaging, followed by statistical analysis of 17 of the linear variables obtained. Results Compared with control group A, the experimental group showed significantly shorter tooth length ([22.930 ±1.849]mm vs [21.240 ±1.651]mm, P<0.05), crown length ([9.270 ±0.559]mm vs [8.150 ±0.889] mm, P<0.05), and mesiodistal width at 4 mm to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) ([7.260 ±0.579]mm vs [5.900 ±0.581] mm, P<0.05) as well as shorter buccolingual width at the CEJ level, mesiodistal width at 4 mm to the CEJ, buc-colingual width at 4 mm apical to the CEJ, distance from the canine cusp to the coronal and occlusal planes, and coronal angulation of the canine (all P<0.05).There was a negative correlation between maxillary canine palatal impaction and age (P<0.05). Conclusion One of the main causes of maxillary canine palatal impaction is that the adjacent lateral incisor is too small to provide suf-ficient guidance to the canine. The severity of maxillary canine palatal impaction increases with the age of the patient.

ABSTRACT

AIM:To explore the feasibility of inducing mouse embryonic stem cells into neural stem cells in vitro. METHODS: Embryonic body induced by retinoic acid and retinal m?ller cells were selected in neural stem cell-defined medium for 7 days, and the morphological changes were observed. The selected cells were stained immunocytochemically with anti-nestin, anti-BrdU antibodies, and their ability of expansion and differentiation were analyzed. RESULTS:Large amounts of neurospheres were derived from embryonic body in the selected medium on the 7th day, which could be passaged and differentiated, stained positive with nestin and BrdU, and expressed nestin, glutaminase and Brn-3 genes. CONCLUSION:Neural stem cells could be derived from embryonic body induced by RA and m?ller cells in the selected medium, which would offer an alternative to treat neuropathy such as glaucoma and retinal degeneration in the future.
